10 Hours to Wyoming

We headed out of Taos Saturday morning for Laramie, Wyoming. After a review of all options for the drive we decided to take the "road less traveled". Everyone knows that given an option to avoid interstate travel we'll take it every time. Yes it did mean a rather long driving day of 10 plus hours versus the 7 1/2 hours through Denver (according to google maps), but have you been through Denver? It cannot be a sane drive with multiple interstates coming together...we may have made better time our way.

As we left New Mexico for Colorado we passed a community of "earth dwellers"...must say it was one strange collection of homes. Many had "art gardens' with fanciful wind socks or metal objects blowing & twirling in the wind...won't see that in Virginia. We passed into Colorado on one of the straightest roads the state must have...right across a valley straight as an arrow with mountains all around us. No traffic and speeds of 65 mph...perfect. We passed a large solar power farm which certainly fit the location.

We got on I-70 just west of Vail and the traffic was as expected...the road actually was a pretty though. We drove past Vail and could see some of their slopes right from the interstate...crowds too. After we noticed the sign for "Tunnel Ahead" we changed our plans to include the pass through the Loveland Pass tunnel. Bad mistake because as we exited the tunnel traffic was at a stand still or actually a creep. Why? We have no idea, just like a drive on I-95...lots of cars, lots of brake action and no sign of anything except a long downhill. We finally made it to our exit and happily got back into our back road odyssey.

Check out the route

...zoom in close, especially on US 40 just north of I 70!
As we drove along there were quite a number (1000's?) of vehicles driving south back towards Denver after a day at Winter Park which happened to be on this road. While we were in Winter Park to fill up the gas tank we noticed the perfect business opportunity...imagine one of these in a college town near you!

Quite a drive & a wee bit unnerving for the driver. Within a couple of miles there were warning signs for Avalanche Zone, Falling Rocks, Deer Crossing, Elk Crossing, Icy Patches, Snow On Road and Watch for Snow Plows. The only sign missing was Moose Crossing, but that came a few miles later. We arrived in Laramie safely after only 10 hours of driving through some of the most beautiful scenery to date.
