Day 1...the Unexpected

It was bound to happen.  Starting with our first big trip in 2009 (13,608 miles) we've never had a car problem while traveling.  About ~30,000 miles of travel over all kinds of road surfaces...can't say 'never' any longer.  Thankfully our car is equipped with an early warning system for low tire pressure.  It saved a blow out and changing a tire on I-64...less than 30 miles from Louisville, KY.

When the light went off we pulled over to check the tires...dramatic difference between the good ones and the back rear.  The 'bad' one was down to 24 pounds rather than the 35 we started off with back home.  Since we were about a mile from an exit we decided that it would be safer to change the tire off the busy highway.  Nice shady spot.  No rushing trucks.  No risk of death by crazy drivers.

After adding some air to the tire the problem was discovered with adding a bit of spit...an old patch had failed and started leaking.  A first for the home mechanic.  Never had a failure...can't say that any longer.  The 'new & improved' patching material evidently isn't quite so improved.  A switch to the spare was made and off we headed towards Louisville...via the scenic Route 60 rather than I-64.

We were so glad not to be on one of our 'less traveled' roads...while driving on No Tom Bull Frog Road in Utah we never saw another living thing for miles.  Last year we drove on the Loneliest Road in Nevada so if we had to have a problem we're glad it happened when and where it did.

After gawking at horse barns bigger than our house we had a fried chicken picnic and made plans for getting a new set of tires Monday morning.  Rather than hitting the road at 6 AM we headed to the tire store.  Left the car and walked to breakfast.  The delayed start meant we did not make it to Wyoming today...tomorrow we'll be on the look out for Prong Horn.
