A Luck Would Have It...Hyalite Canyon

View from our camp
Before heading out to Hyalite Canyon we decided that we’d extend our reservations at a hotel through the upcoming weekend…just in case.   The area is so close to Bozeman (10 miles) and everyone seems to head out that way to enjoy the area on the weekend we were concerned that we’d be unable to find an unreserved site.   Hyalite has only 3 fairly small sites….Langohr (sits along a creek), Hood (the most popular along the lake) and Chisholm (the smallest with 10 sites).

We pulled into Langohr with our fingers crossed.  As luck would have it the campground hosts were cleaning up at an empty site…no reservation sign so we asked if it was available.  Yes was the answer…actually the people left in the middle of the night because it was “too cold for their little girl”.  The family was from Montana so the host was surprised that they were so ill prepared for the night time chills.   Since we’ve been here it has been in the upper 30’s to lower 40’s each and every morning.  The amazing thing is once the sun comes up over the ridge it warms up so quickly that you are in short sleeves in under 2 hours…or sooner in the some cases.  The evenings cool off just as quickly.  Just ask how many layers have been added by certain members of the group…and Cooper sleeps in his Thunder shirt and under a down blanket.

After we set the camp up we headed back into Bozeman for supplies and to cancel the hotel.  No phone or WIFI signals in the canyon itself, but we are close to ‘civilization’.  Once we stocked up on groceries and made a few phone calls we talked ourselves into a beer at The Garage.  This place was down the street from our apartment this past winter…the best thing is that they allow the dog to sit in the patio area with us.  Cooper remembers this too and every time we walk past he thinks we’re stopping.   Maybe we drank too much beer there…

After our Bozones and wings we headed back out to Hyalite. We watched the temperatures drop from mid-80’s down to the 60’s in 15 minutes…wow it was going to be chilly night.
