A Rest Day and Some Snow Pics

Today we took a drive down to West Yellowstone, WY which, surprisingly, is the west entrance to Yellowstone Park. On the drive down we followed the Madison River through a wide glacial valley with massive moraines similar to Jackson Hole. The moraines are piles of rubble left behind by glaciers. They look pretty weird because they are completely flat on top and since they are so porous, there aren't any gullies on the sides like you would expect.

Along this part of the drive we saw our first bald eagles. For some reason there were three of them sitting in a small grove of trees along the river, but we did not see them anywhere else. I guess the fishing is good there or something. (The pic is pretty pixelated because they were a really long way off.)

Here's the Madison River close to West Yellowstone. (This pic could end up on the wall.)

The town of West Yellowstone obviously gets a lot of snow. While Bozeman currently has no snow on the ground, West Yellowstone had a couple of feet and it was snowing hard when we were there. People had even taken snowmobiles to McDonald's.

Here's the McDonald's parking lot in West Yellowstone.

The road back to Bozeman follows the Gallatin River through a narrow and deep valley; very pretty.

They plow the roads a lot!

Like I said, the road was very pretty.

Snowshoes would probably have been useful here.
