A drive along yet another scenic byway on a bright clear
day. We woke up and decided to head off
to see if the air had cleared enough to catch sight of the Three Sisters and
Mount Bachelor. Oregon doesn’t seem to
have an awful lot of roads on their own.
Quite a number are connected to the National Forest Service. These are named but do not seem to have a
ODOT number…only Forest Service numbers.
Quite a number are deemed to be “Scenic Byways” which are the type of roads
we usually prefer to travel. It does
make for some interesting drive times over short distances…on the order of 6+
hours to travel 50-70 miles from Cinder Hill Campground in roughly a large circle.

Salt Creek Falls |
Along the route we were able to take a short hike out to the
second tallest water fall in Oregon called Salt Creek Fall. At over 286 feet tall it was quite spectacular. Lots of water and the spray created a number
of rainbows.

A short hike down a needle
covered trail bought us to the half-way point of the falls…not to the bottom
unfortunately. Of course the pictures
don’t quite do justice to it…never seem to quite catch the scale of these types
of water fall.

Off we headed in the general direction of a set of mountains
called the Three Sisters. Last year we
could see them quite clearly from our hike up Mount Thielsen. This year’s fires have really created so much
haze that though these mountains were a good bit closer we’ve been able to see
them only briefly. Thankfully we were
able to get a really nice view over a lava field. Pretty rugged and still snow topped this late
in the summer.
Not much else worth noting from the drive…no animals to
mention and no injuries to report.
